tujh ko dariya-dili ki qasam (swear upon it, for the sake of generosity!)
sung by jagjit singh and chitra sing, the credit of writing the nazm is disputed— some say jagjit singh himself and others say ‘saba’ afghani. also, the nazm credited to afghani has two more couplets!
tujh ko dariya-dili ki qasam, saqiya!
for the sake of generosity, swear upon it, o bartender!
mustaqil daur par daur chaltaa rahe!
keep the round of drinks flowing one after another!
raunaq-e-meyqada yuñ hi badhti rahe—
the flock and jolly of the winehouse shall only get better—
ek girtaa rahe, ek sambhaltaa rahe!
one shall stumble, another shall get steady!
ek shabnam hi shaan-e-gulistaañ nahi,
the dew alone is not the glory of the rose garden,
shola-o-gul ka bhi daur chaltaa rahe,
the flower's flame also has it's reign that goes on,
ashq bhi chashm-e-purnam se behte raheiñ—
as tears shall keep flowing from moistened eyes—
aur dil se dhuaañ bhi nikalta rahe!
so shall the smoke keep rising from the heart!
tere qabze meiñ hai ye nizaam-e-jahaañ,
in your hold is the command of the entire world,
tu jo chaahe to sehraa bane gulsitaañ,
if you so wish, the desert turns into a flower bed,
har nazar par teri, phool khilte raheiñ—
on your every look, flowers shall keep blooming,
har ishaare pe mausam badalta rahe!
and from your gestures alone, the seasons shall keep changing!
tere chehre pe ye zulf bikhri hui,
these scattered locks on your face,
neend ki god meiñ subah nikhri hui,
and in the lap of slumber, a morning that glows,
aur iss par sitam ye adaayein teri—
on top of that is the torture of that elegance and poise of yours—
dil hai aakhir, kahaan tak sambhaltaa rahe!
‘tis the heart afterall, till when shall it compose itself!
iss meiñ khoon-e-tamanna ki taaseer hai,
it has the essence of the desire and blood*
ye wafa-e-mohabbat ki tasveer hai,
this is the (ideal) picture of the loyalty of love,
aisi tasveer badle, ye mumkin nahi—
and such a picture might change, iys not possible at all—
rang chaahe zamaana badaltaa rahe!
the colours, maybe, the world shall change now and then!
(*desires and blood for khoon-e-tamanna: translations may vary)
and additionally:
(woh ho shamm-e-ferozañ ke gulhaa-e-tar,
whether it is the radiant lamp or the dew covered flowers,
dono se zeenat-e-anjuman hai magar,
both carry the beauty of the congregation but,
ai ‘saba’ apni-apni ye taqdeer hai,
o ‘saba’, it is a matter of one's own destiny,
koyi ho sej par, koyi jaltaa rahe!
one shall lay on the pyre, another shall burn forever! )
